Building Bungalows In £3.7 Million Deal

South Bank Elevation

A disused and derelict piece of land in Redcar and Cleveland is set to be transformed into 28 new bungalows after Esh Construction secured a £3.7 million contract.

Building on behalf of social housing provider Thirteen, the 28 bungalows will be available for affordable rent around the Redcar Road area in South Bank. The development is part of a larger housing-led regeneration programme ongoing throughout the area and is required to meet the needs of an ageing population.

“We pride ourselves on maintaining successful working relationships with our clients and we’re pleased to be working with Thirteen once again”

Divisional director, Esh Construction

Employing local people

"This is a great opportunity for Esh, as a local contractor, to support the wider transformation programme ongoing in the region through our culture of employing local, procuring local, and engaging local,” adds Esh Construction's Dobson.

Homes England

In addition to Homes England funding, the development has been awarded just over £500,000 by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority from the government’s Brownfield Housing Fund, which allows local authorities to target investment towards brownfield sites.

Designed by HMH Architects, the properties will replace terraces which were demolished more than 10 years ago and will complement the nearby South Bank Eco Village.

“We're excited to be working with Esh Construction, as well as the Tees Valley Combined Authority, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Homes England and other partners to deliver these fantastic new homes, which will be a massive boost to the regeneration of the area and create vital job opportunities for local people, says Craig Taylor, MD of Thirteen Developments.

Service diversion works are currently underway, with the construction of the bungalows set to start in July. The first new properties are expected to be available to rent from Spring 2022.

The South Bank development bolsters Esh Construction’s portfolio of projects underway within Tees Valley, notably Bohouse North and Rivers House on behalf of Thirteen. Located in the Middlehaven regeneration area of Middlesbrough, Bohouse North is a striking development of 40 new apartments for affordable rent, while Rivers House is a refurbishment scheme of a former Thirteen housing office into 18 supported housing apartments.
