New plans for retrofit oversight

William Brown

William Bown, CEO of SuperFOIL says he welcomes the new plans unveiled by the UK government to provide stronger oversight of the retrofit industry, fix poor-quality insulation from previous schemes, and implement a fairer, more streamlined compensation system.

“Given the intense heatwaves Britain has been experiencing, which show no signs of slowing in the years to come, especially considering this month has been declared the hottest June on record, it is imperative that a reform to the system is made.

“At the forefront of this change is restoring public trust in the industry. Examples of some of the proposed actions include a transparent public register of approved installers, an end-to-end advice service, and an ability to ban failing companies from government-backed schemes.

“As a result of this, the Energy Ombudsman will be strengthened to fast-track dispute resolutions and gain more authority to be able to fine non-compliant energy companies.

“Immediate financial relief is also a new introduction with this plan, with the Installation Assurance Authority (IAA) raising its repair cap to £25,000 to cover defective insulation work.

“While acknowledging the previous shortcomings of schemes that have come before is a fundamental step in the right direction, the true way the industry can regain public confidence is through a shift away from heavy, error-prone legacy materials toward modern high-tech solutions like multifoil insulation to prevent these failures from happening in the first place.

“It is essential that, moving forward, a fabric-first approach is adopted. Ensuring the use of high-quality materials that are easier to install will lower the margin for error.

“This will not only help progress the UK towards its net-zero target and protect vulnerable households against escalating summer heatwaves, but also ensure that no more families fall victim to inadequate government-backed schemes.”
