The Door & Hardware Federation has sounded a warning that CSCS cards awarded by 'grandfather rights' are set to expire on 31 December 2024.

It is predicted that up to 60,000 industry skills cards will terminate at that point and cannot be renewed – the latest to renew a card (valid for just six months) will be 30 June this year.

“Most people in construction are familiar with the CSCS card, which can be issued either physically or digitally,”  explains the DHF’s commercial director, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens. Although CSCS cards are not a legislative requirement, it is a requirement under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations for contractors to ensure any individual they employ or appoint to work on a construction site has the necessary skills, knowledge, training and experience.

“CSCS cards are supported by the government and are required by most principal contractors and major house builders in order for construction workers to access their sites. They provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job that they are doing.”

As part of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, holders may have to attend and pass a training course. Older and more experienced holders have been able to prove their competence by declaring their longevity of working in the industry. That will no longer apply.

“The DHF continues to encourage its members and the industry to prepare for the changes ahead,” says Sowsbery-Stevens. “If you don’t have the required qualification, you’ll need to register before your card expires in 2024.”
