An important question was raised in PMQs by MP Kit Malthouse – and one that all fabricators need to be aware of – the impending imposition of tariffs on steel imports. (You can check out the clip here - https://www.youtube.com/live/focLvnuZEWw?si=Xpz6qr7FiFAcMLB7&t=2726).
These proposed steel tariffs are understandably causing concern across UK manufacturing in general, and the window fabrication sector will inevitably feel some of that pressure. In short, from the beginning of July, the amount of steel that can be imported tariff-free into the UK is being reduced significantly. And that once quotas are exceeded, a 50% tariff will apply to additional imported steel.
The knock-on effect for fabricators will impact availability, lead times, and, as ever, prices.
Reinforcement is a critical component within PVC-U window and door systems, and any instability in the steel supply chain has the potential to increase costs, extend lead times and create additional procurement challenges for fabricators already operating in a highly competitive market.
However, this is exactly where strong supply partnerships become increasingly important. We have been aware of this for some time now, and have been building safeguards to help protect the industry as much as possible.
Paul Sullivan, managing director, Anglo Metals says: “We have built our business around large-scale steel purchasing power, substantial stockholding and long-established supplier relationships, all of which help us provide customers with continuity and greater pricing stability even during volatile market conditions.
“We are also helping fabricators reduce unnecessary cost elsewhere in the process. Our bespoke cutting service significantly reduces wastage, improves efficiency on the shop floor and removes the burden of processing and managing reinforcement in-house.
“For many manufacturers, procurement complexity has become a major operational challenge in itself. By supplying reinforcement across multiple profile systems from one source, we help simplify purchasing, reduce administration and allow fabricators to focus on production and customer service rather than constantly managing fluctuating material supply.
“The market may become more challenging over the coming months, but businesses that prioritise efficiency, stock security and smarter purchasing strategies will be in a far stronger position to protect margins and maintain competitiveness.”
