300 new homes on Tyneside and 149 in Exeter have just taken a step closer to development as Vistry Partnerships has secured planning permission for the north-east project and a contract for the south-west project - and funding aid from Homes England.

Both projects were announced on 26 February.

The Tyneside deal will be an ambitious regeneration for a 19 acre Tyneside site which has stood unused and semi derelict for over 25 years. 300 homes will be developed on a former freight sidings site.

The project will be the biggest yet undertaken by Gateshead Regeneration Partnership (GRP) – a Partnerships North East venture with the council and housing provider, Home Group.

The plans include 60 apartments, in three blocks and 240 two, three and four bedroomed homes. Half of the properties will be available to rent. There will also be a community hub and open areas.

Homes England has provided support funding for the project as part of the Government’s Local Authority Accelerated Construction (LAAC) programme which was launched to help unlock public land and increase the speed of delivery on local authority housing schemes.

The development will be part of the £350 million GRP programme, which has a vision to create around 2,000 new homes on 16 sites across the borough.

Education & training

As well as improving housing quality and choice, the initiative is providing job and training opportunities.

Vistry has also secured a £24.3 million contract with housing provider LiveWest, that will see it build 149 affordable homes at Harrington Park in Exeter.

The contract includes 62 homes delivered through planning obligations relating to the wider delivery of the project, as well as an additional 87 homes with the support of significant funding from LiveWest and Homes England. A further three wheelchair accessible bungalows will be provided to Exeter City Council.

“We have a very strong track record of building affordable homes and revitalising communities throughout the South-West with quality partners like LiveWest. Harrington Park is a major development that will play an important role in this part of the city for many years to come.”
