Skip The Loo - Toilet Is Out Of Bounds For Trades

Let them use the toilet. That’s the plea from find-a-tradesperson service MyBuilder.com, after finding a third of UK homeowners would not allow a tradesperson to use their toilet while carrying out work on their home.

MyBuilder.com surveyed the British public about having work carried out in their home. Even though tradespeople are often unable to access basic facilities during their working day, over a third (34 per cent) of respondents stated that they would not allow them to use their toilet.

No tea

More than half (53 per cent), would not offer a cold drink, while 44 per cent said that they wouldn’t offer them hot drinks.

The research uncovered that women were more welcoming than men, who were on average 10 per cent more likely to let tradespeople use the toilet and offer drinks.

Surprisingly, the younger generation were the most reluctant to allow access to the toilet (49 per cent said they wouldn’t), compared to 20 per cent of over 55s.

We deserve better

Scott McBride, a plasterer from Kent, said: “We take pride in our work and try hard to give our customers a high standard of finish, so it's disappointing when sometimes tradespeople aren't treated with the respect they deserve. I'd urge customers to remember that tradespeople are just people trying to do a good job for their money. We train for years to be in this career and that's worthy of trust and respect. "

Andy Simms, trade expert from MyBuilder.com said: “Having to leave during a job to find a toilet elsewhere is not only inconvenient, it makes the work take longer for the customer.

“More importantly, it’s nice to be nice. By hiring a tradesperson, you’re entering into a relationship with them and as with any relationship, it’s a bit of give and take. Wouldn't it be better to build a good relationship with them, by being welcoming? It is likely to help the job go more smoothly and the tradesperson may be more willing to go the extra mile for you in return.”
