The new ‘Work Safe. Safe Work’ campaign by TrustMark to help boost the recovery has received backing from Certass.

The campaign, in the form of a booklet, a leaflet, a video and pre-prepared social media content, has been developed by TrustMark and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and is endorsed by the Construction Leadership Council

The booklet and YouTube video give practical advice to homeowners about what Covid safety measures should be discussed and carried out before, during and after work is done in and around their home.

It also sets out the need for conversations to be had with the tradesperson and what actions they should expect the tradespeople to deliver. It provides simple and clear information on tasks that should be completed and a list of helpful questions to ask.

Chairman at Certass, Jon Vanstone says: “As lockdown restrictions ease, more homeowners are having work carried out at home and this is vital for the recovery of our sector. Work Safe. Safe Work is a great campaign that will bring real clarity and confidence to homeowners who are ready to have home improvements carried out.”

“We know that many people have reservations about what is expected of them and what they need to provide and do during work in people's homes to ensure it is safe. In providing clear and simple information, the Work Safe. Safe Work campaign will inform homeowners and give them confidence in this new reality we are finding ourselves in.”

Booklet and video

The eight-page booklet, which the tradesperson can give to the homeowner before the visit to the property, is a three-part guide setting out what types of tasks are the responsibility of the homeowner, such as disinfecting door handles before and after the tradesperson comes into the home. It also sets out what responsibilities lie with the tradesperson, such as providing their own PPE. It covers the time before, during and after the work has been completed. There is also a video animation to help further explain the guidance.

Construction Leadership Council

Andy Mitchell, Co-Chair of the Construction Leadership Council, says: “Government and industry have issued new guidelines for tradespeople that promote safe working but there is very little in the way of consumer facing guidance. Staying safe is a joint responsibility, so we all have a duty to protect each other. We hope the Work Safe. Safe Work booklet will provide valuable information and reassurance to homeowners when having work carried out in and around their homes.”

Certass as TrustMark Scheme provider

Certass' Vanstone adds: “Certass is a TrustMark Scheme operator, giving members a rapid route to membership. It is a strong brand for businesses to be associated with, as it is the only government-endorsed quality mark for tradespeople and offers real, robust protection for consumers. That’s why membership is so important to Certass.

Working Safely in your Home

Vanstone continues: “It’s good to see the number of similarities between the ‘Work Safe. Safe Work’ campaign and the Certass Trade Association’s ‘Working Safely in your Home’ consumer guide, which we have had great feedback on from our members. Now they have extra resources to help promote their safe working practices, so that their customers can have real confidence in their installer’s commitment to keeping their family safe.”
